How to choose the right dog life jacket

Weight and size: Several jackets are sized by weight, from XXS for dogs of 0.6 to 1.5 kg up to XXL for dogs over 25 kg. Use both weight and chest girth to choose.
Rescue handle: A top grab handle lets you lift your dog out of the water or guide them back to the boat. Check that the handle sits over the center of the back.
Buoyancy and head support: Foam panels along the body keep your dog floating, and a front float helps keep the head above water, which matters for flat faced breeds.
Visibility: Orange, yellow and pink jackets are easy to spot in the water. Camo designs look great on shore but are harder to see, so keep them for calm water close to you.
Adjustable fit: Look for adjustable straps at the neck and belly so the jacket stays snug without rubbing when your dog paddles.

Sizing and fit

Weigh your dog, then measure neck circumference and chest girth at the widest point behind the front legs, and back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Compare with the size chart on each product page. If your dog is between two sizes, choose the larger one, then tighten the straps until you can fit two fingers under them.

Dog Life Jacket FAQ

Does my dog need a life jacket if it can swim?

Even strong swimmers can tire quickly in currents, waves or cold water, and a dog life jacket adds buoyancy and a handle for lifting. Breeds with short legs, heavy chests or flat faces often struggle more in water. A life jacket is a sensible choice for any dog on a boat.

How should a dog life jacket fit?

A dog life jacket should sit snugly around the neck and belly without limiting leg movement. You should fit two fingers under each strap, and the jacket should not slide when you lift your dog gently by the handle.

Can I leave my dog alone in the water with a life jacket?

No. A dog life jacket supports your dog but never replaces supervision. Stay within reach, introduce the jacket in shallow water first, and rinse off salt or chlorine afterwards. If your dog has a health condition, ask your vet before swimming.
