How to choose the right dog muzzle

Muzzle type: Basket muzzles, like the metal basket and leather basket models, let a dog breathe freely, pant and drink, which makes them the usual choice for walks and longer wear. Soft mesh, silicone and leather muzzles are more compact and suit short situations such as nail trims.
Snout shape: Flat faced breeds need a muzzle built for a short snout. The muzzle for French Bulldogs is designed for that shape, with a quick release feature.
Purpose: For dogs that scavenge on walks, the fully covered mesh muzzle acts as a barrier against picking up bait or rubbish. For grooming, vet visits or car rides, the calming cap limits what your dog sees to help nervous dogs settle.
Material: Metal and leather are sturdy for strong dogs, silicone is light and soft, and nylon mesh is easy to clean and dry quickly.
Adjustability: Adjustable straps behind the ears keep the muzzle secure so your dog cannot paw it off, without pressing on the eyes.

Sizing and fit

Measure snout length from the tip of the nose to about 1 cm below the eyes, and snout circumference with the mouth slightly open, then add a little room so your dog can pant. Compare these numbers with the size chart on each product page. Some models also give a weight guide, such as the leather basket muzzle, with S for 10 to 20 kg, M for 20 to 35 kg and L for 40 to 65 kg. If your dog is between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Can a dog drink water with a muzzle on?

A dog can drink with a basket muzzle, such as the metal basket muzzle, because the open cage leaves room to lap water and pant. Tighter mesh, leather and silicone muzzles hold the mouth closer, so a dog should only wear them for short periods and never in hot weather or during exercise.

How do I get my dog used to wearing a muzzle?

Muzzle training works well in small, positive steps. Let your dog sniff the muzzle and reward it, then place a treat inside so your dog puts the nose in voluntarily. Gradually fasten the straps for a few seconds, then longer, always before your dog shows stress.

Should I use a muzzle to stop barking?
